How Nia Changed My Life

It was 2010 when I took my first Nia class. I had done plenty of dancing in my life, but this was the first class ever to focus me on sensation, on sensing my body while it was moving. In Nia, movement is not a performance but a mind-body sensory experience.

Nia’s emphasis on sensation changed my life. From the first class, I started making discoveries about my body. Soon I realized I was making discoveries about myself. Sensation led me to experience myself and my personality in new ways.

The more Nia classes I took, the more I noticed the joy that comes from sensation. In Nia we call this the Joy of Movement. Joy of Movement is what makes the time just fly by in Nia class. Joy is the reason why at the end of the hour, I am dripping with sweat, sorry it is over and incredulous that a whole hour has passed. Joy is what made me want to go to Nia class more often, which in turn caused me to lose more weight and feel marvelous even on days when I didn’t have class.

By hooking me in with joy and sensation, Nia put me on an upward spiral of wellness. Within months I was noticeably stronger and healthier. My joints worked better, I saw more muscle definition, and my heart and lungs were stronger from all that cardio.

Equally important, I felt happier and more connected to my body. My feelings and opinions became clearer to me, because I was listening to my body.

Now, seven years later, my life is completely changed, in entirely positive ways.  Now I am a teacher of Nia, giving others the same joy that pulled me in. I teach three classes a week and feel the Joy of Movement every day. My muscles are stronger, my stamina is way up, and my cholesterol is down 44 points! I notice my sensations all the time now, and my body plays a more active role in my life. When I am having a difficult conversation, I don’t have to think so hard with my mind about what to say. I just tune in to my sensations and my body tells me how I really feel or what I really think. My body speaks the truth to me, because now I am finally listening.

Fantastic! I love how you worded this HUGE benefit of Nia: “I notice my sensations all the time now, and my body plays a more active role in my life. When I am having a difficult conversation, I don’t have to think so hard with my mind about what to say. I just tune in to my sensations and my body tells me how I really feel or what I really think. My body speaks the truth to me, because now I am finally listening.”

Dear Paula,

Sharing your experience is inspiring.

Thank you for putting your experience “out there.” I, too, was impacted by your comment, “I don’t have to think so hard with my mind about what to say . . . my body speaks the truth to me, because now I am finally listening.” Nia helps bring the practice to daily life.

Here’s to you!

Teresa
